Horsebox sizes and dimensions

Information updated on 20th Feb 2024

We firmly believe there are no circumstances where horsebox sales should take priority over manufacturing a horsebox that cannot legally carry the horses it has been stalled for. Being a conscientious manufacturer we firmly believe our first duty is to our customers. Payload issues should be discussed openly with each customer. At some point a manufacturer has to make the decision that the horsebox is going to be too long and too heavy and not rely on small print in a contract to cover payload issues. Unfortunately in many circumstances small print is all too common!

Trading horsebox sales against overall vehicle length or payload has never been something we would consider. For us it has always been a very simple calculation. Start with the payload required for each model and working backwards to the living area specification and add the number of horses to be stalled for.

There are many other smaller considerations to add into the design and probably the most critical is where to stall the horses and how much overhang to allow. Overhang and wheelbase also impact on the overall legal vehicle length. Simplified, the overhang is the distance from the rear wheel centre to the very back of the horsebox and the wheelbase is the distance from the front wheel centre to the rear wheel centre. These calculations give us an overall vehicle length we were happy to manufacture and more importantly enable us to sell with confidence and sleep each night!

Naturally horsebox sales are important, but it is also critical we arrive at a sale by being factual, open and in essence conscientious. This ethos defines us and is at the core of KPH.
